GLOBALVOICES
The world is shaped by the voices that participate in it – voices shaped by history, identity, borders, and the shifting realities of the world around us. GlobalVoices represents the collective dialogue that emerges when different perspectives, experiences, and traditions come together. For centuries, diplomacy has determined how societies interact: forging alliances, resolving conflict, and imagining shared futures.
Diplomacy: Past, Present & Future
Diplomacy is never concerned only with the present moment. It is about understanding how the past informs the present, and how today’s decisions will shape the world of tomorrow. At GlobalVoices 2026, we invite delegates to explore diplomacy through time: reflecting on the historical foundations of international relations, engaging with the complexities of our current geopolitical landscape, and imagining the possibilities that lie ahead.
Why this theme?
Diplomacy is deeply rooted in history. The borders that define our world today were drawn through centuries of negotiation, conflict, and compromise. This is your chance to challenge boundaries, to respect history, and to consider the ways in which borders can be transcended through collaboration. Cultural ties, economic networks, migration, and global challenges increasingly blur the lines that once seemed permanent.
To understand diplomacy in the present, we must first understand how it evolved. Why were certain borders drawn where they were? How have historical grievances and alliances shaped modern policy? And how can diplomacy move beyond inherited divisions to address the shared challenges of our time?
From disputes over territory and sovereignty to co-operation on climate change, technology, and global health, diplomacy today requires balancing respect for national identity with recognition of our growing interdependence. It calls on diplomats not only to navigate the legacy of the past, but also to envision new frameworks for collaboration in an increasingly connected world.
With our theme “Diplomacy: Past, Present & Future”, we are challenging delegates to think across time. We want you to understand the historical forces that shaped today’s international system, engage critically with the issues facing us now, and imagine innovative diplomatic approaches for the decades ahead.
This Year’s Aim
At this iteration of GlobalVoices, our theme will shape every stage of the delegate experience. From your research and preparation to the debates and negotiations within committee, we encourage you to think historically, act diplomatically, and imagine boldly. Consider how the past informs your country’s position. Reflect on how historical borders and alliances influence present conflicts. And most importantly, ask how diplomacy might evolve to transcend old divisions and address global challenges that no nation can solve alone. Whether you are representing a rising power, a small state, or a historical actor in a crisis committee, your voice will contribute to the ongoing story of diplomacy.
The world has always been defined by voices in dialogue. It’s time to add yours.
