The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) carries primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, giving it a unique role within the UN system. With the authority to respond directly to threats to peace, impose sanctions, and authorise collective action, its decisions can have immediate consequences for conflicts and civilians alike.

At NoviceNations 2027, delegates will consider the devastating civil war in Sudan and the humanitarian catastrophe it has created. Debate will focus on how the international community should respond to escalating violence, mass displacement, food insecurity, and threats to civilian populations while navigating questions of sovereignty and political legitimacy. Delegates will need to balance urgent humanitarian concerns with the competing strategic interests of Council members as they seek a path towards peace, stability, and accountability.

How big will this committee be? This will be a small committee.

Is this a single- or double-delegate committee? This is a double-delegate committee, so delegates will work in pairs to represent their assigned country or position together.

How much experience do I need to sign up for this committee? This committee is best suited to advanced delegates who are already very familiar with MUN and confident navigating a fast-paced, high-pressure debating environment. It is a particularly good choice for delegates interested in conflict resolution, geopolitics, humanitarian crises, international law, and high-stakes diplomatic decision-making.

How much will I have to speak in this committee? Due to the small size of this committee, delegates should expect to speak frequently in each session. The double-delegate format allows delegates to share responsibilities, but all participants should be prepared for an active and highly engaged style of debate.

How will debate be structured in this committee? This committee will broadly follow our standard Rules of Procedure, with some adaptations to reflect the structure and powers of the Security Council, including the role of the P5.
