Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Issues Committee

SOCHUM, the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (Third Committee), focuses on the social and cultural questions that shape people’s lives across the world. As one of the principal committees of the General Assembly, it considers issues ranging from human rights and inequality to cultural protection, identity, and justice.

At NoviceNations 2027, delegates will examine the contested ownership of cultural artefacts removed through colonialism, conflict, and unequal systems of exchange. The debate will explore who has the strongest claim to objects of historical and cultural importance, what responsibilities museums and former colonial powers should bear, and how repatriation can contribute to cultural justice. Delegates will weigh questions of legal ownership, preservation, national identity, historical accountability, and access to shared heritage as they consider how disputed artefacts should be returned and protected.

How big will this committee be? This will be a small committee.

Is this a single- or double-delegate committee? This is a single-delegate committee, so each delegate will represent their assigned country or position independently.

How much experience do I need to sign up for this committee? This committee is particularly well suited to intermediate delegates who are comfortable with the basics of MUN and ready to engage with more nuanced debate and negotiation. It is a particularly good choice for delegates interested in cultural heritage, historical justice, human rights, and international cooperation.

How much will I have to speak in this committee? Due to the small size of this committee, delegates should expect to speak a significant amount in each session. This makes it a good option for delegates who are comfortable contributing regularly and would like the opportunity to play an active role in shaping debate.
