Welcome to Oxford + Final Preparations

It’s almost conference weekend! These are exciting times, and we know you’ve been busy drafting up your opening speeches, so here are a few final reminders to help you prepare for your arrival and make that first committee session go smoothly.

Reviewing the Rules of Procedure (RoP)

Take a moment to read through the conference’s Rules of Procedure. Understanding the rules governing the flow of debate will help you participate and debate confidently. However, do remember that you can ask for clarification on the RoP during the conference by making a ‘Point of Parliamentary Inquiry’ or by sending a quick note to your Chairs - they’re there for you!

What to pack?

The conference has a ‘Business Smart’ dress code, which means wearing professional attire like a smart shirt/blouse and trousers/skirt, and a blazer or a suit and tie. This also includes wearing your school uniform (if this is your school's policy), and we are always delighted to see delegates representing their culture through traditional clothing. Let’s make sure you look the part!

Oxford’s weather can be unpredictable, so make sure to take that into account when packing your clothes. Stay warm outdoors by bringing an insulated or puffer jacket, and we would recommend bringing a jumper with you into your committee sessions. The rooms in Examination Schools will have the heating running, but they can still get chilly! When you’re exploring the city, bringing a compact umbrella with you would be a smart decision in case of sudden rain showers.

A word on printed materials

Our conferences have a ‘no technology’ policy, meaning that electronic devices are not allowed outside of unmoderated caucuses, so it can be helpful to have a paper copy of your position paper and some notes on hand. However, we strongly discourage bringing along a mountain of printouts. We want you to come with your own ideas to the conference, and be ready to listen to the other delegates as you try to reach a resolution together. It’s completely fine to write down short, clear notes to use as an aid during your debate, but try not to read them out word-for-word. Your debate skills will truly shine if you speak with your head up, looking out towards your committee, and engaging in and responding to the current discussion.

A final message on behalf of everyone on the OG Team

We genuinely can’t wait to welcome you to Oxford in just a few short days. We recognise the effort and dedication that you’ve put into preparing for the conference, and it will be amazing to see your debate and ideas come to life over the weekend. Know that, as you step into a community of passionate students from across the globe, each and every one of your voices is valued and respected, and that through debating, negotiating, and collaborating, you are sure to find yourself making new friends both inside and outside of committee time.

So take a deep breath, embrace the excitement, and get ready for a truly rewarding weekend.
